What is Traditional?
The Traditional Primer
American Traditional tattoos are defined by bold black outlines, a limited palette of solid primary colors, and iconic imagery: panthers, eagles, anchors, daggers, roses, and swallows. The style prioritizes longevity — heavy linework and flat fills age better than almost any other approach.
Codified in the early 20th century by sailors and itinerant tattoo artists, most famously Norman Collins (Sailor Jerry), working out of port cities like Honolulu, Baltimore, and New York.
Anyone who wants a tattoo that will still be readable in 40 years — the style was engineered for longevity in ways modern styles were not.
Look for clean, consistent line weight with zero wobble, and flat fills that go edge-to-edge without holidays (uneven patches) — a traditional piece with weak lines will not age well.
