What is Realism?

The Realism Primer

Realism tattoos replicate photographic quality in skin: precise tonal gradients, accurate anatomy, true-to-life texture. The most common subjects are portraits, wildlife, and still life objects. It is technically the most demanding style to execute well and the most punishing of shortcuts.

Origin

Became viable in the 1980s and 1990s as needle technology, ink quality, and technique evolved enough to support the fine blending realism requires. Artists like Paul Booth and Bob Tyrrell established black-and-grey realism as a distinct discipline.

Best for

Commemorative portrait work, wildlife pieces, or any subject where the goal is genuine likeness rather than stylization.

What to look for

Examine healed photos of the artist's portraits — fresh ink hides errors that show up after healing. Look for clean mid-tone transitions and bright, true highlights, not grey smudge where white should be.
