What is Japanese / Irezumi?

The Japanese / Irezumi Primer

Japanese Irezumi (literally "insert ink") is a full-composition tradition built around iconic imagery from Japanese mythology and nature: koi, dragons, tigers, phoenixes, chrysanthemums, water, and wind. Pieces are designed holistically, often covering large body areas in a single unified composition.

Origin

Formalized in the Edo period (1603-1868) by woodblock print artists who turned to tattooing when the government periodically banned their trade. The visual vocabulary of Ukiyo-e prints became the canonical reference.

Best for

Collectors planning large-scale work who want a cohesive, culturally grounded visual language that scales beautifully across major body areas.

What to look for

The composition should be designed for the body part — not pasted on it. Look for artists who plan the whole piece before starting, and who understand how wind and water flow as compositional connective tissue.
